VOCAL GIRLS PODCAST: PRIYA RAGU
The VOCAL GIRLS podcast is a series where music journalist and VOCAL GIRLS Founder, Megan Graye, chats to artists about their past, present and future, and the music that intertwines these experiences.
This week, Megan chats to Priya Ragi, who’s just released her new single, ‘Illuminous’. Born in Switzerland to Tamil parents, Priya grew up singing and playing traditional music with her family, but was deterred from pursuing music full time. After years of pursuing her passion around work, Priya decided it was time to take a chance on herself and teamed up with her brother, a producer under the name of Japhna Gold. Together they created her debut mixtape, ‘damnshestamil’ which came out last year. Priya’s unique blend of traditional Tamil music and modern RnB and electro (Raguwavy) is original and attention grabbing. This authenticity hasn’t gone unnoticed; she’s already been signed to Warner, toured and made music with Jungle and been listed on theBBC sound of 2022 poll.
In this episode we chat about her journey to pursuing music full time, what it’s like to work alongside her brother, and the necessity for more South Asian artists in the music industry.
This podcast is produced, edited and presented by Megan Graye. Music for the podcast was composed and recorded by Jessica Edwards ad the graphics are by Alayna Hunte. They are both members of the VOCAL GIRLS team.
