BRITS 2020: VOCAL GIRLS BEST MOMENTS

The BRITS 2020 is over, but not without a few tears, tequila shots and big diversity statements! Here’s VOCAL GIRLS’ best bits…

Mabel Winning Her First BRIT

Exactly 30 years after mother Neneh Cherry won two BRITS,  Mabel took home the prize for Best Female Solo Artist! Mabel was also the only female artist to be nominated in the gender neutral categories of the awards - go Mabel!

104.7k Likes, 1,134 Comments - M a b e l (@mabel) on Instagram: "Woke up one year older and wiser and as best solo female Brit award winner!!! Best birthday present..."

Lizzo Downing Harry Styles’ Glass of Tequila

After absolutely killing her medley performance, Lizzo went on to interrupt a live interview with Harry Styles by downing his whole glass of tequila. Lizzo you are the Queen we all want to be!

Stormzy Paying Homage to His Team of Women

After winning his second BRIT for Best Male Solo Artist, Stormzy was quick to pay homage to his team of women: “To be the best male, I’ve got the most incredible females in my team,” he said.

Jack Whitehall Dissing the Gender Inequality

Leading up to the Best Female Solo Artist award, Whitehall mockingly said: “Environmental issues have been a big theme of the awards show this year. And in the spirit of sustainability the Brits has been recycling all the same excuses for why so few women were nominated.” Awkward...

Billie Eilish Winning Best International Female Solo Artist at 18

It does appear that 18-year-old Billie Eilish can do no wrong. Not only did she perform her new Bond theme ‘No Time To Die’, but she won Best International Female Solo Artist. During her acceptance speech she became tearful admitting: “I’ve felt very hated recently. And when I was on the stage and I saw you guys smiling at me, it genuinely made me want to cry, and I want to cry right now, so thank you.”

Paloma Faith Making Inequality Statements

Previous BRIT award winner Paloma Faith used sarcasm to its best effect whilst presenting the Best International Male Solo Artist Award: “We’re here to award an unrepresented category, the men” she remarked.

Dave’s Poignant and Provocative Piano Performance

Before winning Album of the Year for Psychodrama, Dave sent shivers down our spine with his provocative performance of “Black,” in which he went on to call Boris Johnson a “real racist,” and paid tribute to recent terror attack victim Jack Merritt. Powerful stuff.

Celeste’s Stunning Performance of ‘Strange’

Not only did she win the Rising Star Award, but the modest Celeste haunted viewers with her breathtaking performance of ‘Strange’, ensuring big things are to come for this incredible voice.

Foals Calling for More Female Nominees

Foals used their first BRIT winning speech to call for more female nominees, after only men were nominated in the Best Group category. In the speech, frontman Yannis said: "Hopefully next year we'll see some more women in this category," before leaving the stage. We hope so too Yannis!

Megan Graye

I’m Megan, the Founder and Editor of VOCAL GIRLS! I started VG in 2020 after realising the shocking lack of diversity within the music industry and wanted to do something positive to help change it! By night, I spend all my time and money on gigs and festivals and by day, I’m an award winning Content Producer, Music Journalist, Music Photographer and Radio and Podcast Host. I have an extremely eclectic music taste, loving everything from Fontaines D.C. to Billie Holiday, but I have a particular soft spot for indie, alt, punk, rock, folk, funk, soul and disco (couldn’t narrow it down anymore). You can listen to all of my previous VOCAL GIRLS CLUB shows on Islington Radio here and all podcast episodes here!
