BRITS 2020: FOALS CALL FOR MORE WOMEN TO BE NOMINATED

The band used their first Brit Award win to make an equality statement.

Foals have used their winning speech at the BRIT Awards to call for more female nominees, after only men were nominated in the Best Group category. The equality statement from the band mirrors overwhelming criticism of the male dominated nominations across the board.

In the speech, frontman Yannis thanked the BRITS, their fans and label and then said: "Hopefully next year we'll see some more women in this category," before leaving the stage.

Foals weren’t the only ones to highlight the need for gender diversity and female recognition; Stormzy, who won Best Male Solo Artist was quick to pay homage to his team of women: “To be the best male, I’ve got the most incredible females in my team.”

Other winners included Mabel for Female Solo Artist, Billie Eilish for International Female Solo Artist and Celeste for the Rising Star award.

I’m Megan, the Founder and Editor of VOCAL GIRLS! I started VG in 2020 after realising the shocking lack of diversity within the music industry and wanted to do something positive to help change it! By night, I spend all my time and money on gigs and festivals and by day, I’m an award winning Content Producer, Music Journalist, Music Photographer and Radio and Podcast Host. I have an extremely eclectic music taste, loving everything from Fontaines D.C. to Billie Holiday, but I have a particular soft spot for indie, alt, punk, rock, folk, funk, soul and disco (couldn’t narrow it down anymore).
