WELCOME TO THE VOCAL GIRLS CLUB
WHAT IS VOCAL GIRLS?
VOCAL GIRLS celebrates the most exciting new music, artists, bands and gigs from across the world. Here, you’ll find exclusive news, engaging interviews, honest gig reviews, topical opinion pieces and decisive album critiques on everything from Punk to Funk. Led by women, VOCAL GIRLS champions emerging talented musicians everywhere, with a focus on female and LGBTQ+ artists. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to be heard, so sing louder and shout louder and we’ll listen!
WHY DOES VOCAL GIRLS FOCUS ON WOMEN AND LGBTQ+ ARTISTS?
The music industry is statistically male dominated; in fact, according to the PRS Foundation only 20% of composers and songwriters are women. This isn’t just the case for musicians, but also for those who work behind the scenes in the industry too, with 85% of record labels owned by men. In 2018 the BBC studied some of the highest attended music festivals in the UK and found that “of 756 acts advertised on the posters of nine festivals found 77% were all male.” The stats show that women are scarce in the industry and VOCAL GIRLS wants to change this. We’re trying to help balance out the industry by creating more space for female artists to be covered, to help educate and raise awareness of the issue. We know that there’s an abundance of talented female and LGBTQ+ musicians out there who should be getting more exposure, so it’s our mission to champion them through content and coverage.
IS THIS NOT UNFAIR TO MEN?
At VOCAL GIRLS we celebrate inclusivity, not exclusivity! This is a positive space, so everyone is welcome here! Although we are female and LGBTQ+ focused, we do champion and cover many talented male artists too. We are by no means undermining the talent or success of anyone; we are simply pushing the focus to women where it has previously been lacking. That way we can begin to create a more balanced industry. We are adding focus to women, not taking anything away from men. As musician Sigtryggur Baldursso told Keychange: “The music industry needs to be aware that to correct something like a gender balance, you sometimes need to push in one direction.”
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
