TOP 10 SONGS BY WOMEN TO LIFT YOU OUT OF THE 2020 BLUES
Feeling a bit blue? We can certainly relate. There’s only one thing for it; music! With this in mind, we’ve created an essential list of the best songs to blast through your headphones for when you’re just feeling a bit ‘meh’. These are songs by women and for women! Enjoy…
10. ‘Juice’ - Lizzo
If you have somehow missed Lizzo’s iconic song ‘Juice’ in the 18 months since it was released, then, quite frankly, where the hell have you been?! It’s impossible not to have a bit of a boogie when listening to the feel good, beat-orientated, sassy lyrics of this song. “I be drippin’ so much sauce / Got a bitch lookin’ like RAGU” is quite possibly the most confusing, but weirdly satisfying, pop lyric I’ve heard in a long while.
9. ‘Summer Girl’ - HAIM
Soft rock girl band HAIM gifted us with the song ‘Summer Girl’, which is absolutely perfect for chilling out, taking a deep breath and retaining your sense of self. It’s the kind of song you can play when everything’s getting on top and you just want to be alone. Repetitive soothing lyrics and a little R&B influence are the ideal solution to those late-night freak-outs.
8. ‘Bad Guy’ - Billie Eilish
At only 18, Billie is undoubtedly a pop inspiration. This is a song which taunts those simultaneously loved and hated ‘bad boys’. We all know a few that spring to mind! With an unmistakable chorus and jaunty sarcastic lyrics, you can get completely lost in the music - it’s the perfect escapism for mood improvement and distractions. As Billie proclaims in the lyrics “I do what I want when I’m wanting to”, maybe we should all follow this strategy? It sounds pretty good to me.
7. ‘Bad Girls Forever’ - PINS
I can’t get enough of this fresh 2020 single from indie post-punk Mancunian trio, PINS. It gives such a unified feel with the chant-like lyrics and booming consistency of the cyclical beat. The blasting guitar and jumpy synth sounds provide that headbanging melody which, literally, drowns out all else. You just can’t hear your own thoughts when playing this song- and sometimes that’s just what we need.
6. ‘Froot’ - Marina And The Diamonds
This song is a whole rainbow of electronic sounds and it’s the sassy vocals that really make it shine. And who doesn’t love an array of ‘oohs’ and ‘lalalalas’ throughout a song? Definitely a dance song, it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves as an upfront female tune.
5. I’m Coming Out’ - Diana Ross
80s disco, funk and soul - I love you! This song can get me moving even on my lowest days. Also regarded as an anthem for the LGBTQ+ community, it’s a true celebration of putting yourself forward and feeling totally free. We all need this ideology when faced with the challenges of the 21st century.
4. ‘Say My Name’ - Destiny’s Child
How could this list be complete without at least a nod to the 90s queens? ‘Say My Name’ is a heavenly mixture of accusations, fast paced lyrics and feisty rap-style delivery. It speaks to every girl who’s ever dated a shady guy and, in slick 90s fashion, it empowers them to tell him where to go.
3. ‘Thank U, Next’ - Ariana Grande
The Christmas release that had us all feeling dreamily festive is also undeniably a positive message for gals everywhere to never settle and to solidify yourself as your first true love. We love some girly positivity, and this song definitely gives that and more.
2. ‘Don’t Start Now’ - Dua Lipa
Chart topping star Dua Lipa disappoints no one with this inspirational, ‘taking-no-crap’ tune. “I’m all good already / So moved on, it’s scary / I’m not where you left me at all”. Rumour has it, if you sing it loud enough you can become her! Whilst we can’t be certain if this is true, maybe all women should be taking solace from this cool, calm and collected song.
1. ‘Ugly Heart’ - G.R.L.
Damn, these lyrics are inspirational: “I wonder does it blow your mind / That I’m leaving you far behind”. It’s a totally infectious lyric and the vocals are great too. Feel sad no more as G.R.L mock society's beauty standards and highlight what we all need to realise; in relationships kindness should come first.
Bonus Track: ‘Million Dollar Bill’ - Whitney Houston
We just couldn’t have this list without including the ultimate legend Whitney Houston. Just try not to get up and dance to this song - we challenge you!
