THE VOCAL GIRLS LAUNCH

Last week we welcomed you to MOTH Club for the launch of our platform with amazing performances from Olivia Dean and Zola Courtney. If you missed out or just want to relive it, here's our roundup of the evening.

On the 19th October, we held our sold-out launch event at MOTH Club, formally introducing you all to VOCAL GIRLS whilst enjoying some great music. Opening our doors at 7pm, the room was full of friendly faces both familiar and new, all who funneled into the retro looking venue, full of VOCAL GIRLS balloons and complete with MOTH Club’s own gold glittery ceiling. Our merch table was packed with t-shirts and tote bags, the bar was stocked, and the music was on!

The night was hosted by the brilliant BBC Introducing in London’s presenter, Jess Iszatt, who wonderfully introduced Zola Courtney, the 22-year-old London based singer. Fresh from a set at Live at Leeds Festival, Zola beautifully performed her tracks, including songs from her recent EP ‘All at Once', which was released in September this year. The performance was effortless and the perfect introduction to the night; accompanied by her talented band, she easily put everyone at ease and set a great mood. Following Zola’s performance, Jess Iszatt was back to introduce the incredible Olivia Dean - our long awaited event headliner!

Olivia smoothly took to the stage and opened with her upbeat tune ‘Echo’, which got everyone dancing and singing. She and the band were clearly enjoying themselves on stage and had great chemistry for their last show for a while. She comfortably swayed around the stage while playing a range of tracks from her soulful discography, performing a number of her slower songs including the heart-wrenching ‘Slowly’ and ‘What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays?’. Dean of course included well loved tracks such as ‘The Hardest Part’ and ‘Ok Love You Bye’, but also dabbled in a couple of cover songs including Justin Timberlake’s ‘Senorita’ and her previously released, Ms. Dynamite’s ‘Dy-Na-Mi-Tee’, which got the entire venue dancing and laughing with each other.

Following Dean’s amazing performance, Jess invited the VOCAL GIRLS team on stage to celebrate the evening with a group photo. Matt Smyth then kept us going until the end with a DJ set of disco tunes that got everyone dancing in what felt like our very own VOCAL GIRLS club night. Our thanks are extended to every attendee who joined us, the incredible performers, and to Flowers By Imogen and Crate Brewery for contributing to our event! We couldn’t be more grateful to everyone involved who made this night as amazing as it was. We loved hosting you for the evening and couldn’t have wished for better company. This event was the first of many, and we can’t wait to see you all at the next one!

Amber Lashley

Hello hello, my name is Amber and I’m currently an English student at UCL in London. I’m getting involved with VGC because I’m very much obsessed with music and live music, and I want to celebrate and support some amazing artists in any way I can. I’ve previously picked up writing work as a freelance music journalist and also worked at the independent music venue The Boileroom, which has helped me feel a lot closer to the industry. I’m constantly looking for / going to live shows, searching for new music, or listening to a range of old favourites, at the moment I’m especially stuck on Happyness and Katy J Pearson.
