THE BEST INDEPENDENT INDIE VENUES IN LONDON
Continuing on our VOCAL GIRLS city tour of London, we’ve listed some of the capital's most treasured independent music venues to get you excited for post-Covid gigs!
It’s no surprise that London music venues have struggled to survive these past few years with growing rent prices, stricter noise controls and of course… the C word. But with continual fan support, crowd fundraisers, and a general excitement in the live music scene once again - music venues are back and better than ever! Here’s some of our favourites...
The Lexington
96-98 Pentonville Rd, London N1 9JB
A well known classic in the indie scene, this Islington pub has hosted hundreds of up and coming bands over the years such as Black Honey, Fat White Family, Spector and Pinegrove (to name a few). With such a legendary status, it’s no surprise that a massive team of supporters helped keep this place alive when it hit jeopardy during COVID last year, proving the importance of small gig venues like these.
Troxy
490 Commercial Rd, London E1 0HX
You’ll never forget your first visit to this iconic venue; mine was in 2016 seeing the equally iconic Kaytranada! I stepped through the doors and saw this grand, traditional looking space that looked as if it hadn't been touched since the doors opened 80 years ago. Originally a cinema built in 1933, the now Grade II listed Art Deco building has hosted massive events like Sink the Pink as well as huge acts such as Patti Smith, The Pixies and Robbie Wiliams. Based in Limehouse, this venue has stolen the hearts of many East London residents and continues to ooze charm.
Lafayette
11 Goods Way, London N1C 4DP
Brought to us by the same people behind Omeara, (Mumford & Sons Ben Lovett) this 300 capacity venue sadly opened shortly just before COVID hit. However, they have still managed to squeeze in some awesome acts like Robert Glasper and Grouplove and have coordinated several live stream gigs. Based in Kings Cross, this venue is aimed at bringing in a variety of exciting London acts. We can’t wait to see what the brand new Lafayette has in store once gigs return.
Moth Club
Old Trades Hall, Valette St, London E9 6NU
You’ll either recognise this venue for its snazzy gold foil curtains or the chequered dance floor; either way, we’re happy this former Veterans Club maintained its original decor to become the cracking venue it is today. What makes this particular venue stand out? Whether it's the original interiors or the huge variety of gigs that get put on here (they even host a weekly bingo night!), this venue is an independent gem.
The Windmill
22 Blenheim Gardens, Brixton Hill, London SW2 5BZ
Another venue saved by its loyal fans (including Noel Gallagher and La Roux who both donated!) during COVID times, this Brixton venue has been consistently voted as one of the best independent music venues in London - and showcases some of the newest acts in the scene. Having spoken to a few Brixton locals, this venue is described as “essential’’ in South London providing a safe space for music's biggest fans.

EartH
11-17 Stoke Newington Rd, London N16 8BH
One of the newer members on our list, EartH describes itself as ‘a multi-arts space for the 21st Century’ bringing “the leading, rising and most important talents of all fields” under one roof’. They're not wrong; some incredible and eclectic acts have played in the short time it's been open such as Bat for Lashes, Joy Crookes, Staves, Alfa Mist and Sunflower Bean. Along with a great sound system, its layered seating/ standing area is perfect for shorties like myself who are all familiar with ‘hearing’ a gig instead of the privilege of being able to see the act!
The Old Blue Last
38 Great Eastern St, London EC2A 3ES
Owned by VICE, this bar dates back hundreds of years. Once you’re inside it’s hard to believe the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse and The Horrors played there; it’s run down and cramped but that’s just the way we like it! How can you beat cheap live music and a great selection of beers?! If you’re new to London, be sure to check out this iconic Shoreditch pub.
Corsica Studios
4, 5 Elephant Rd, London SE17 1LB
Not forgetting London’s buzzing electronic music scene, Elephant & Castle’s Corsica Studios is a second home to London’s biggest Techno/ House fans including myself. With classic stripped back interiors underneath a railway, you couldn’t ask for much more from an elite city dancing space for the early hours of the morning. The majority of world class DJ’s have played in this much loved space over the years and we can’t wait for their doors to open once again!
Shacklewell Arms
71 Shacklewell Ln, London E8 2EB
With a capacity of just 200, it can get real cosy in this East London boozer! As another classic pub known for showcasing the UK’s most exciting talent, this unpretentious Dalston gem boasts charm with simple decor and wooden floors, inviting all to enjoy the wonders of live music. If you’re in that end of town, be sure to pop your head in for a pint and see what great acts the venue has to offer!
