IDLES’ JOE TALBOT: “YOUNG WOMEN DON’T SEE THEIR VOICE BEING REPRESENTED”
During his ‘In Conversation’ tour he stressed that he lack of female representation in the music industry “leaves inspiration and opportunity stagnant”
Whilst on his ‘In Conversation’ tour around the UK, IDLES frontman, Joe Talbot, called out the music industry for its lack of equal representation.
Being interviewed on stage by music legend and Creation Records founder Alan McGee, Talbot said: “The industry is saturated with white male guitar bands including IDLES!”
“I looked at the {Reading and Leeds} lineup and realised that it was fucking 90% men - I’m not going to lie, I didn’t notice, and I was like, that is shit!”
“I am a white man so I’ve had the privilege of being ignorant and not having to struggle for what my perspective is. I’m represented in films and TV and advertising and music all the fucking time,” he continued.
Talbot stressed that there must be a more equal representation in the industry: “Not because ‘we need to give the ladies a chance’ - but because there’s loads of fucking amazing artists out there that happen to be women. There needs to be a balance so that there’s equal opportunity, because young women don't see their voice being represented. They don’t think they’ve got a standing chance, cause they haven’t - cause no one’s fucking booking them! It’s all men at Reading, so of course, it leaves inspiration and opportunity stagnant and the government doesn’t take it seriously.”
Talbot clearly felt personally passionate about the subject stating: “It’s about my daughter hopefully growing up and understanding what it’s like to see equal opportunity.”
In his extremely open and honest talk at the Water Rats Pub in London, Talbot also discussed ‘Me Too’, music, addiction, mental health, sexuality and answered questions and comments from the gripped crowd.
The show was supported by newly signed Irish Punk band The Clockworks, who impressed an un-expecting audience.
