VOCAL GIRLS PODCAST: COME BACK BETTER
Megan Graye chats with Goat Girl as part of Dr. Martens and the Windmill’s Come Back Better initiative.
Last month we joined forces with Dr. Martens and the Windmill as part of their two-week programme Come Back Better. The initiative offered collaborative opportunities to marginalised genders within the music industry - including the chance to support Goat Girl at a celebratory live show and Q&A at the Windmill on the 30th June.
After applying for the support slot, acts were shortlisted and then one lucky band were selected to play alongside Windmill favourites Goat Girl. London based trio Headboy came out on top, and by no means did they disappoint. Playing tracks such as ‘Alligator’ and my personal favourite ‘N.O.W’ (demos up on their website), their off-kilter vibrations and unparalleled demeanour went down an absolute treat. What made it even more impressive was that this was also their first gig - unreal! An exciting new addition to the scene; I hope that we’ll be seeing Headboy pop up in and around London a lot more in the coming months!
Of course, it only made sense to have some familiar Windmill faces headline the event, and it goes without saying that Goat Girl are no strangers down in Brixton. The group dropped their second LP ‘On All Fours’ at the beginning of this year, and getting to hear it live in such an intimate setting was pretty incredible, to say the least. Ideally, it would’ve been nice to move about a bit more and get a little sweatier, but I’ll happily take a seated, candle-lit Goat Girl gig over no gig at all!
Not getting too carried away with the music, however, one important aspect of the night was the live interview and Q&A hosted by our very own Megan Graye (Founder of VOCAL GIRLS). Clottie Cream, L.E.D, Rosy Bones and Holly Hole of Goat Girl sat down to chat about the many issues people of marginalised genders and identities still face within the industry today. Opening up and sharing their own experiences on the matter, it was insightful hearing how the four aim to create safer spaces at their own shows and continue to connect with other bands who are doing the same. Undoubtedly, it is a conversation well had, but unfortunately, one that we must carry on having in the hope that we can truly come back better!
